Overview
Big Tree Medical was established in 2017 as a member-based healthcare company with the intention of providing members with a more affordable, accessible, and patient-focused approach to healthcare. Rather than traditional insurance-based medical practices, Big Tree Medical provides its members with all of their primary care services according to a flat, monthly fee arrangement that is not dependent on an insurance company or its provider network. To provide its members with access to primary care services that can be received either in-person or virtually, Big Tree Medical offers members direct access to providers such as physicians, nurse practitioners, dieticians, and their support staff.
Medical Director
Even though Big Tree Medical does not publicly post a Medical Director for their weight loss program, co-founder Adam Wheeler, MD, MBA, is the current Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Wheeler has over 20 years of experience in providing healthcare, the last of which was as a Managing Partner of Tiger Pediatrics and has a current interest in general pediatrics, mental health, healthcare reform, and medical weight loss. As a physician leader and co-founder of Big Tree Medical, Dr. Wheeler has taken on a significant leadership role in building a patient-centered healthcare system.
GLP-1 and Medical Weight Loss Programs
Big Tree Medical’s approach to helping those struggling with excess body weight includes a medically supervised course of treatment for weight loss. This approach treats obesity as being a chronic metabolic disorder and not simply as being a result of lifestyle choices. Patients will be given a full evaluation based on their physician’s recommended medical workflow that includes: evaluating their history of illness; current medication usage; finding and evaluating any hormone imbalance; lab tests; body mass index (BMI); metabolic assessment; and lifestyle behavior patterns (nutrition, exercise).
Weight Loss Program Pricing
Because Big Tree Medical has not published fixed or standardized prices on its web site for its medical weight-loss program, prospective patients can only obtain a ballpark range of what the program would cost. Some factors that will affect the total cost of the program include the medications prescribed, how many medications are prescribed, and the dosage of each medication prescribed. For more accurate and up-to-date pricing on current program prices, prospective patients are asked to contact the clinic directly. Big Tree offers affordable primary care membership plans at a reasonable monthly cost; however, members and non-members can expect to pay a separate fee for all GLP-1 medications and other specialized weight-loss services.
Patient Reviews
In general, peer reviews on Google and Yelp, about Big Tree Medical, show a similar emphasis on providers being responsive through Virtual Care options, along with a patient-focused approach to treating patients with the Direct Primary Care Model. Feedback indicates that providers spend more time alleviating patients’ concerns, than traditional health care providers do. Many patients also comment on how easy messaging, telehealth services, and follow-up support make it possible to communicate with providers efficiently.
