Bariatric Procedures at Maryland Bariatrics
At the Maryland Bariatric Center, board-certified bariatric surgeons perform the following procedures:
- Roux-end-Y Gastric Bypass: Gastric bypass surgery is a gold standard weight loss surgery. It is the second most frequently performed weight loss procedure worldwide. The surgery is restrictive, which leads to malabsorption of components that lead to weight loss.
- Sleeve Gastrectomy: Also called Gastric or Vertical Sleeve, the procedure is performed by eliminating 80% of the stomach. The 20% that remains becomes a slender pouch, which looks like a sleeve or tube. The pouch stores a lesser amount of food and keeps hunger at a bay.
- Gastric Balloon: This procedure is nonsurgical. It works well for people who did not lose weight with any diet or workout or both. A small gastric balloon shall be placed inside the stomach to restrict food intake. It is removed after 6 months.
Other procedures lie biliopancreatic diversion and bariatric revision are also performed at the Marland Bariatrics.
