Bariatric Surgery Information at Baystate Health

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass: Also called the Roux-en-Y, this procedure involves expertise. The surgeon makes tiny incisions in the abdomen to insert tools and a camera to perform this surgery. The method involves creating a small pouch inside the stomach, which connects directly with the small intestines. After the surgery, anything the patient eats goes into that small pouch created inside the stomach and right into the small intestines. Food bypasses the stomach and the intestines to create nutrition deficiency. Patients can expect up to 60% weight loss.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: This is also a laparoscopic surgery in which two-thirds of the stomach is eliminated. The surgery leaves a tube-shaped sleeve inside the stomach. Post-surgery, anything that the patient eats, goes into the sleeve that was created during the surgery. As a result, patients feel fuller when they eat little food. Therefore, they ingest fewer calories. Patients can lose more than 60% of their weight in the first 2 years from the surgery.

Undergoing any surgery involves a certain amount of risks. With bariatric surgery too, there are some risk factors to consider. For instance, the patient may develop GERD after a year from the surgery. Malabsorption of nutrients may cause medical problems. As a result, patients should stay in touch with the surgical team and take time to recover from the surgery. Though it does not take much time to recover and get back to normal life, health issues may crop up and cause anxiety.

The best advice doctors give to patients after the surgery is to eat well, exercise moderately and improve their lifestyle.
